We have given Tia our final act of love - a peaceful and dignified passing.
At 18.5years of age, Tia was the oldest living koala currently recorded on ZIMS. While there may be older koalas not represented on ZIMS, it is safe to say that Tia was among the oldest in human care.
ZIMS (Zoological Information Management System) is a global database used by zoos, aquariums, and wildlife parks to record and share important information about the animals in their care.
It helps us track each animal’s health, diet, behaviour, genetics, and more - all in one secure handy place. By sharing this data with other facilities around the world, we can make better decisions about animal care, breeding, and conservation.
Using ZIMS means we’re part of a global network working together to provide the best possible care for animals, both in human care and in the wild.
Being listed as the oldest living koala, is a testament to the safe and happy life Tia lived at the park, and the incredible care she received from our team of dedicated koala keepers.
As animals reach their twilight years, their keepers pay very close attention to how they are ageing and how they’re coping with any age-related ailments. Additional supports and care strategies are provided where appropriate, but ultimately, it’s the animal’s quality of life that guides our decisions. When signs show that comfort and wellbeing can no longer be maintained, we make the kind and compassionate choice to say goodbye - ensuring there is no prolonged suffering.
