Jessie the Wombat

Jessie was born at the park in March 2020. Wombats rarely breed in human care, so her parents must have been very much in love!

One cold, wintery afternoon in July 2020, Jessie was found alone on the den floor. She weighed just 790 grams and had only the beginnings of fine fur. She was too young to be venturing out of her mum's pouch.

Attempts to return her to the pouch were unsuccessful, so the safest option was to hand-rear her.

Over the next few months, Jessie outgrew two incubators, developed a full coat of fur, learned to maintain her own body temperature, and weaned from milk. With each passing week, she grew stronger, faster, and more confident. Equal parts playful and cuddly, she captured the hearts of everyone she met.

Six years on, Jessie is a strong, independent young lady who loves her corn, and her cuddles!
