Black-headed Python

scientific name

Aspidites melanocephalus

conservation status

Least Concern

They feed almost exclusively on reptiles, including venomous snakes. Sometimes small mammals and birds.

The nocturnal Black-headed Python is found in tropical woodland, grasslands and rocky areas throughout the North West Cape in Western Australia to Gladstone in Queensland.

It is suggested that the black head is protruded from cover during the day to absorb heat without exposing the whole body.
